Sing Hallelujah

My five year old son and I have been absolutely captivated by the movie “Sing”. We’ve watched it at least a dozen times over the past four days and have no plans of stopping anytime soon. We both love the music and can’t seem to get enough of the endearing characters and the beautiful songs they sing. Of course, my son likes all the songs that are sung by boys but for me there’s only one song that truly stands out. It’s “Hallelujah”! Each time I hear this song it crushes me and brings me to tears. Why is this happening? Is it just because its a good song, with  heart warming lyrics and a beautiful melody, or is it something deeper than that? What I do know is this song is touching my heart and I wanted to know why? I started to research the lyrics so I could better understand the songs meaning and intent. The songwriter Leonard Cohen explained, “Hallelujah is a Hebrew word which means ‘Glory to the Lord.’ The song explains that many kinds of Hallelujahs do exist. I say: All the perfect and broken Hallelujahs have an equal value”. That’s it, “Broken Hallelujah”! I was broken, in fact, severely broken beyond human repair. God saved me by His grace and love and this has changed my life forever. What once was lost and broken is now found and loved. Now when I hear the song Hallelujah I’m reminded that it’s not just a lyric in song but a beautiful description of ones path to God and why He truly deserves our praise. What’s your Halleluja?
