The Heart Speaks

The [intrinsically] good man produces what is good and honorable and moral out of the good treasure [stored] in his heart, and the[intrinsically] evil man produces what is wicked and depraved out of the evil [in his heart]; for his mouth speaks from the overflow of his heart.”   – Luke 6:45

It is amazing to think that our words have such power. We can speak kindly about another person being an encouragement to them, which will lead to life. On the other hand, we can speak negatively,  which will most certainly lead to death. The lives of our relationships are created by the words and actions that stem from our hearts.

Matthew 7:12, “ So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”

This verse in Matthew seems simple enough, right? We want to be treated well with respect, love, and kindness. Therefore we should treat others the same way. This may be easy to understand, but difficult to live out. There is a deeper issue that requires an honest look within.

We need to get honest about our hearts because scripture tells us that what is stored in them will pour out of it (Luke 6:45). If we hold a negative view of another person and think it remains hidden in our hearts think again, because what we think, or better yet, what we feel about another person most certainly will affect how we speak to them, of them, and ultimately how we treat them.

Proverbs 15:4, “A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.”

Proverbs 16:24“Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.”

We see in these two verses that we can positively or negatively affect our relationships with others by what we say. What we say and what we do comes from our hearts. It is from those deep parts of our hearts that love can flow. We know that God is love, and without Him, we have no love.

1 John 4:7-8, “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.  Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

The source of love, which is God is found in Christ Jesus, and it is in Him that love comes to live in us. In this truth, we can all love each other a little better! We must check our hearts and go to the source of life and love to mend what is broken deep within us. Life can be restored, even in the most broken places through the healing love of God.

Let us all seek His love for that love to restore our hearts and in time restore the broken relationships around us. Live out a life that speaks love!
