Wondrous Pause

“Hear this, O Job; stop and consider the wondrous works of God.

–   Job 37:14

In the morning we rise, whether early or late, with an agenda. Our day is full of our to-do list that entails work, school, chores, errands, exercise, and if we are lucky a little fun. This all makes for a very busy day which turns into a very busy life. Is this all there is? Are we meant to always be on the go, never to rest, or ponder all that surrounds us? No, in fact, we see that in creation, even our creator rested.

“By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.”

–   Genesis 2:2-3,

God, the ultimate creative source is the one who created the heavens and the earth, and He rested. Let us just get something clear, God did not need to rest, because He is God, but yet He rested, and called it holy, set apart. Why, then did He rest, if He did not need to? This is a great example for His creation to witness, and in turn, follow, We being human, need rest, but more importantly, we need God.

Could it be that in our pause, we find ourselves pondering for things that are of God? That is God? In rest, we may take notice of that which we need more than anything else, the God of the universe. We see throughout scripture a command for stillness and rest, now that must tell us how important it is for us. One of my favorite verses that reminds me, not only to be still but why is psalm 46:10.

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”

–   Psalm 46:10

In the still moments, the quiet moments,  are where we take notice of this awesome creation and our, even more, awesome creator. Pausing in life allows us to answer the Lord’s beckoning, with awe-struck wonder, and gratitude. From this place, we come to find our assurance in His sovereign, and capable hands. Like Job, we can hear God calling us to take notice of His wondrous works ( Job 37:14).

Maybe, today, we can pause, and in our stillness ask the Lord to open our eyes to all that He has done!

Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.

 –   Psalm 119:18
